Joyang Bangjik: A Vintage Cafe Full of Little Surprises in Ganghwa

During our day in Ganghwa, we stopped by Joyang Bangjik, one of the area’s best-known vintage cafés.

Joyang Bangjik.

We had seen plenty of photos before visiting, so we already knew it was a famous place.

But once we actually arrived, it felt much more interesting than we expected.

There were old objects everywhere, little garden spaces, vintage furniture, paintings, lights, and so many small details tucked into every corner.

🐱 Nyang: “Meong, look at this.”

A few steps later—

🐱 Nyang: “Wait, look over here too.”

And somehow, before we had even ordered coffee, we were already wandering around like we had come to visit a small museum.

That was probably the nicest surprise about Joyang Bangjik.

It didn’t feel like a place where you simply sit down, drink coffee, and leave.

It felt more like somewhere you slowly walk around together, notice little things, take photos, and keep finding something new.

And that made the whole visit feel a little more special.

We knew it was popular… but not this popular

We arrived at around 12 PM on a weekend, and the first thing we noticed was how many people were already there.

The main parking area was almost full, so we ended up using a nearby public parking lot instead.

It was only around noon, so seeing that many visitors already there made us realize just how popular the place really was.

🐶 Meong: “It really is famous.”

🐱 Nyang: “Now I’m even more curious.”

And honestly, that was exactly how it felt.

Seeing so many people there made us even more curious about what made this place so special.

The fun starts before you even order coffee

Before we even reached the main café space, there was already so much to look at.

Old objects were placed here and there, little garden areas were carefully decorated, and every few steps there seemed to be something new waiting around the corner.

It didn’t feel like we were simply walking into a café.

It felt more like we had entered a small world of its own.

🐱 Nyang: “Meong, come look at this too.”

🐶 Meong: “Coming ㅎㅎ What did you find this time?”

There really was that much to see.

We kept stopping, looking around, taking photos, and pointing things out to each other.

By the time we finally made it closer to the café, we had already spent quite a while just wandering around outside.

🐱 Nyang was already having way too much fun before the coffee even appeared.

Even the restroom area was worth a look

One of the funniest little surprises was the restroom area.

We were just heading over there for a quick break, but even the path leading to it was decorated with plants, old objects, and little details that made us stop again.

🐱 Nyang: “Wait… even the restroom area is pretty?”

At this point, we probably shouldn’t have been surprised anymore ㅎㅎ

Still, it was one of those small moments that made the whole place feel thoughtfully put together.

Even the parts you normally wouldn’t pay attention to somehow became part of the experience.

And then we finally stepped inside

After wandering around outside for quite a while, we finally stepped into the main café space.

And that was when we both stopped for a second.

The inside was much bigger than we expected.

There were paintings, old furniture, lamps, sculptures, vintage objects, and all kinds of little decorations filling the space.

Some corners felt very Korean.

Others had an almost European, antique-shop kind of mood.

And somehow, all of those different pieces came together to give the space its own warm, slightly magical atmosphere.

🐶 Meong: “There’s really a lot to look at.”

🐱 Nyang: “I know… I don’t even know where to start ㅎㅎ”

That was honestly the fun part.

Every time we thought we had seen enough, something else caught our eye.

🐱 Nyang: “There’s something to look at in every corner.”

We even found little Meong & Nyang friends

While looking around, we started noticing little dog and cat figures hidden among the decorations.

And of course, once we noticed one, we started looking for more.

🐱 Nyang: “Meong, there’s a cat here!”

🐶 Meong: “There’s a dog over there too.”

From that point on, spotting them became our own little game ㅎㅎ

It was such a small thing, but moments like that made the whole space feel even more fun to explore together.

Time for coffee… finally ☕

After all that wandering around, we finally remembered that we had actually come to a café ㅎㅎ

So, at last, it was time for coffee and bread.

The bakery section had a lot more choices than we expected, and honestly, choosing just a few was harder than we thought.

🐱 Nyang: “This is dangerous… everything looks good.”

🐶 Meong: “Take your time. Pick whatever you want.”

🐱 Nyang: “I’m looking, I’m looking ㅎㅎ”

There was so much to look at that we kept changing our minds every few seconds.

Every time we thought we had finally decided, another bread somehow caught our eye.

So we just kept walking along the display, pointing things out to each other and taking our time before finally choosing a few favorites.

The three we picked

In the end, we chose three breads to share.

Angel’s Temptation — ₩8,500
French Picnic — ₩7,500
Chocolate Brioche — ₩4,500

The Chocolate Brioche was a new menu item when we visited, while Angel’s Temptation was the one that caught our eye first because it looked so colorful and pretty.

We were curious about all three for completely different reasons ㅎㅎ

🐱 Nyang: “Okay… now the real tasting begins ㅎㅎ”

Our favorite was the Chocolate Brioche 🍫

Out of the three, the one we both liked the most was actually the Chocolate Brioche.

It didn’t have a lot of cream or filling inside, and it wasn’t the fanciest-looking one either.

But the chocolate flavor was rich enough on its own, and the bread was soft and easy to eat.

Sometimes the simple one really does win ㅎㅎ

🐱 Nyang: “Chocolate never disappoints.”

And Meong ended up choosing this one as his favorite too ㅎㅎ
So this time, we happily agreed on the winner.

The other two: French Picnic & Angel’s Temptation

The other two breads each had their own charm.

The French Picnic reminded us of Korean-style garlic cream bread.

It was creamy, garlicky, and a little richer than the simple savory garlic bread you might expect.

The Angel’s Temptation, on the other hand, was much brighter and more refreshing.

It looked the prettiest of the three, with a colorful, creamy appearance that immediately caught our attention.

Nyang usually prefers richer desserts—especially chocolate—so Angel’s Temptation wasn’t her personal favorite.

🐱 Nyang: “It’s really pretty… but I’m still team chocolate ㅎㅎ”

Still, if you like fruity or slightly tangy desserts, this one might actually suit you better.

And the French Picnic?

Warm, creamy, garlicky, comforting.

Very hard to dislike ㅎㅎ

So, is Joyang Bangjik worth visiting?

For us, yes ㅎㅎ

But honestly, the best part wasn’t just the coffee or the bread.

It was the feeling of slowly walking around together, finding little things in every corner, taking photos, and stopping every few minutes because one of us had spotted something else.

Joyang Bangjik felt less like a place where you simply sit down for a drink, and more like somewhere you enjoy the whole space itself.

A café, a little museum, a gallery, a garden…

all mixed together in a way that somehow feels warm and fun.

🐱 Nyang: “I think I looked around more than I actually sat down ㅎㅎ”

🐶 Meong: “That was the fun part.”

Exactly.

If you like unusual cafés, vintage interiors, or places where there’s always something new to notice, Joyang Bangjik is definitely worth adding to a day in Ganghwa.

Next stop: shrimp 🦐

After spending a slow, fun afternoon looking around Joyang Bangjik, we were ready for the next part of our Ganghwa day.

And this time, we were getting hungry ㅎㅎ

Luckily, our next stop was only about a 12-minute drive away.

We headed to Daesan Susan, where a very different kind of happiness was waiting for us—

fresh grilled shrimp, shrimp ramen, and garlic-butter shrimp heads.

🐱 Nyang: “Coffee and bread were good… but I think I’m ready for shrimp now ㅎㅎ”

🐶 Meong: “Perfect timing. Let’s go eat.”

And just like that, our café afternoon ended and the next delicious part of our Ganghwa day began ㅎㅎ
